Fast delivery is now one of the biggest reasons shoppers choose one store over another. For e-commerce brands in Canada, same-day shipping usually means one thing: orders placed before a daily cut-off time leave the warehouse the same business day. This guide explains how cut-off times work, what affects them and how to offer faster shipping with a 3PL.
What same-day shipping means
Same-day shipping is not the same as same-day delivery. Same-day shipping means the order is picked, packed and handed to the carrier on the day it is placed. Delivery time then depends on the carrier service and the distance to the customer. Within the Greater Toronto Area, many ground parcels arrive the next business day.
How cut-off times work
A cut-off time is the latest time an order can arrive and still ship that day. Orders received after the cut-off ship the next business day. Cut-offs are set around carrier pick-up times, so the warehouse has time to pick, pack and label every order before the truck arrives.
| Order type | Typical cut-off | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Parcel (small packages) | Mid-afternoon | Parcels are quick to pick and pack, and carriers collect late in the day |
| Pallet or LTL freight | Around midday | Pallets need building, wrapping, a bill of lading and a booked carrier |
| Marketplace and retail orders | Varies | Labels, appointments and routing guides add time |
What can delay same-day shipping
- Orders that arrive without stock on the shelf (inventory not yet received).
- Address errors or payment holds in your store.
- Custom kitting, gift wrap or special packaging.
- Large promotions that push volume above normal levels.
- Carrier delays or weather.
How to offer faster shipping with a 3PL
- Choose a warehouse close to your customers. A warehouse in the GTA reaches a large share of Canadians within one to two days by ground.
- Connect your store directly so orders reach the warehouse in real time, not by email or spreadsheet.
- Keep stock levels accurate and send inbound shipments before you run out.
- Show the cut-off on your site, for example “Order by 3 p.m. ET to ship today”.
- Plan promotions with your 3PL so extra staff is ready for the volume.

Frequently asked questions
Is same-day shipping the same as same-day delivery?
No. Same-day shipping means the order leaves the warehouse the same day. Delivery time depends on the carrier and distance.
What happens to orders placed after the cut-off?
They ship the next business day.
Do weekends count?
Most 3PLs ship on business days only, so orders placed on Friday after the cut-off or on the weekend ship on Monday.
Can pallet orders ship the same day?
Yes, when they are received before the pallet cut-off and a carrier is available.
