The holiday season is when most online stores make a big share of their year. It is also when warehouses, carriers and customer service are under the most pressure. This holiday peak season fulfillment checklist helps Canadian e-commerce brands plan stock, shipping and returns so orders still go out on time from Black Friday to Boxing Day.
Key dates for the 2026 holiday season
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Friday, November 27, 2026 | Black Friday |
| Monday, November 30, 2026 | Cyber Monday |
| Early to mid December | Last ground shipping dates for Christmas delivery (check each carrier) |
| Friday, December 25, 2026 | Christmas Day |
| Saturday, December 26, 2026 | Boxing Day sales |
| January 2027 | Returns peak |
Carriers such as Canada Post, Purolator, UPS and FedEx publish their own holiday cut-off dates each year. Check them in November and show the last order date for Christmas delivery on your website.
6 to 8 weeks before Black Friday
- Forecast demand. Use last year’s sales, this year’s growth and your planned promotions to estimate units per SKU.
- Order stock early. Suppliers and ocean freight slow down in the run-up to the holidays. Plan for delays at the factory, at the port and on the road.
- Book warehouse space. Tell your 3PL how much extra stock is coming and when, so space and labour are ready.
- Plan bundles and gift sets. Kits take time to build. Have them built and stored as finished stock before orders start. See what is kitting?
- Check your packaging. Make sure you have enough boxes, mailers, inserts and gift wrap for peak volume.
2 to 4 weeks before
- Send inventory to the warehouse so it is received and ready to sell before your sale starts.
- Confirm order cut-off times for same-day shipping with your 3PL.
- Test your store, discount codes and order flow to the warehouse with a few real orders.
- Update shipping rates, delivery promises and your returns policy on your website.
- If you sell on Amazon, check FBA inbound deadlines and capacity limits early. See Amazon FBA prep requirements.
During the peak
- Watch stock levels daily and pause ads on items that are about to sell out.
- Keep an eye on order volumes and tell your 3PL about any big promotion before it goes live.
- Answer “where is my order?” questions quickly with tracking links.
- Move fast on any carrier delays and tell customers early if a delivery date changes.
After the holidays
- Expect more returns in January and plan the staff and space to process them. Read our guide to e-commerce returns in Canada.
- Restock returned items that pass inspection so they are ready for winter sales.
- Review what sold, what ran out and what was left over, and use it to plan next year.
Why a 3PL helps at peak
Peak season is where outsourcing fulfillment often pays for itself. Instead of hiring temporary staff, renting extra space and running to the post office, you send stock to a 3PL that already has the space, people and carrier connections. You pay for the extra storage and orders only while you need them. For a full comparison, see 3PL vs in-house fulfillment.

Frequently asked questions
When should I send holiday inventory to my 3PL?
Aim to have stock received and ready to sell at least 2 weeks before your first big sale. If it comes by sea, plan several weeks earlier to allow for delays.
When is Black Friday in 2026?
Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30, 2026.
How can I avoid running out of stock over the holidays?
Forecast by SKU, order early, keep a small safety stock of your best sellers and check stock levels every day during the peak.
Can a 3PL handle a sudden spike in orders?
Yes. That is one of the main reasons brands use one. Tell your 3PL about big promotions in advance so they can plan staff and space.
